Homework Assignment #2
Hello Intrepid Junior Curators! Your next mission is as follows: Create your own page on the online exhibit site Click the more button below for instructions As you already know, each of you has a blank page on the site in your name. You will be using the blog administration feature to edit these pages. To do this, you will need to follow the following directions. Feel free to print them out first to keep them handy, or open up a new browser window and leave them open on your computer desktop. Directions (details below) 1) Sign in to the Site Admin 2) Choose Manage: Pages 3) Choose Edit [Your Name] Page 4) Write something about yourself 5) Load flickr photos 6) Add your Artifact to the page 7) Write something about your Artifact
Save your page and view it 9) Edit as necessary Detailed Directions 1) Sign in to the Site Admin To create our pages, you will need to sign in first. Click on the Home button on the top of this page and then choose Site Admin in the righthand column of the site. This will bring up the WordPress login screen. WordPress is the blog software we are using to create the online exhibit. Login with the same username and password you used before.
2) Choose Manage: Pages This will take you to what’s called the dashboard. You will choose Manage from the buttons across the top, and Pages from the buttons that appear below that.
3) Choose Edit [Your Name] Page On this page you will see a listing of all the pages on the site. Find your name in the list and choose Edit.
4) Write something about yourself You will see a page that contains a number of fields, starting with the Page Title and the Page Content. Don’t change the page title - that should stay your name. But the Page Content field is where you will write something about yourself. Tell us a little bit about who you are, what you like to do and why you chose this class. This is a chance to be creative. Impress us!
The buttons on top of the field are for basic formatting, like bold and italics and strikethrough, as well as bullets for lists like this:
- daredevil
- spiderman
- wolverine
and numbered lists like this:
- monkey
- octopus
- guinea pig
They also allow you to indent, like this:
“Mr. President I confess that there are several parts of this constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure I shall never approve them: For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information, or fuller consideration, to change opinions even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise…”
- Benjamin Franklin
The next three buttons control aligment, like this: Left Align
Center Align
Right Align
The next two buttons are a chain, which allow you to create links to other websites, like this: http://www.whatscookin.com/. The picture icon is for adding pictures, but we won’t be using this to add pictures. The next buttons are undo and redo, and finally an HTML button that is for extra credit only! So don’t use that right now.
So enough about that. Write something about yourself - use the formatting buttons to make it look the way you’d like. Be sure to choose the Save and Continue Editing button below the Page Content field as you go along so you don’t lose your work. Every time you save, you can scroll to the bottom of the page to see a preview of what your page will look like. When you are done, you’ll add the artifact you created.
5) Load flickr photos To add your artifact from the flickr site, you’ll need to choose “click to load flickr photos” beneath the Page Content field. This might take a minute or two to load, so be patient. Once the images have loaded, type in one of the Tags you included in your image to help you find it more easily.
6) Add your Artifact to the page After you have found your image, click it once and it will appear in the Page Content field above. From there, you can resize it, cut and paste it where you want it. Alternate 5 & 6) If 5 & 6 above don’t work, you can Link Photos directly from flickr If the flickr photos button doesn’t work, here’s what you need to do to get the photo directly from flickr. Get the ugly URL from the flickr photos (follow steps 1-8 of Homework Assignment #1). Come back to your page and click the Insert Image (tree) icon above the Page Content field. A small box will open, into which you will paste your ugly URL in the Image URL field. In the Image description field, add a brief description. Finally, set the Alignment to Left and click the Insert button. After you’ve inserted it you might need to resize it or cut it and paste it where you want it.
7) Write something about your Artifact Once you have placed your artifact image where you want it, write something about why you chose that artifact and why you chose the format that you chose. 8) Save your page and view it Once you are done, save your page and choose View site from the top of the page to see how it really looks on the site. If you like what you see, you are done. If not, choose the Back button in the browser to go back to the Write Page page. Or follow steps 1 through 3 above. 9) Edit as necessary Feel free to edit and view your page as much as you need until you get it to look the way you want it. Have Fun!
